This piece was originally created in 2002 when Ebrahimi caught the last half of Scarface on television, after not having seen the movie for years. Soon after the painting was complete, Ebrahimi’s friend of 20 years expressed his appreciation of the painting, and asked Ebrahimi to paint one for his birthday, which was three months away. Ebrahimi agreed, but when his friend’s birthday came around, he had not even started the painting.
For three birthdays, Ebrahimi promised his friend a painting, but failed to deliver one. In 2005, on his birthday, his friend made the two hour drive to Ebrahimi’s home, took the painting off his wall, and left with the original. Having promised his friend a duplicate for three years, Ebrahimi considered the act justified.
